Julian Waters has been a professional lettering artist for more than 20 years. His most important teachers have been the legendary German calligrapher and type designer, Hermann Zapf, as well as his parents, Peter and Sheila Waters - who both studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Waters was a typographic consultant to Maya Lin during the construction of the Vietnam Memorial, and his clients have included the National Geographic Society and the U.S. Postal Service. For the latter he has designed lettering for books, posters, and postage stamps, including the Bill of Rights stamp and the multi-sheet Legends of American Music series. He has received numerous awards and his work has been exhibited widely. A member of the faculty of most of the annual international calligraphy conferences since 1982, Waters has taught and lectured all over North America and Europe, including substituting for Professor Zapf in his two-week calligraphy master class at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
