Lance Hidy

Lance Hidy became interested in letterforms at the age of 12 in Portland, Oregon, when he came under the influence of Lloyd Reynolds, a well-known teacher of italic handwriting. While studying art at Yale University, Hidy pursued an interest in printing and graphic design, which led to his 1969 co-founding of David R. Godine, Publisher in Boston. Today, he is well known for his book and poster designs, illustration and photography. The photomontages he created with Adobe Photoshop software have been widely reproduced and exhibited. A retrospective of his work appeared at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1994. For two years he was art director at the Harvard Business Review, ending in July 1999, when he reopened his illustration and design studio. For many of the last thirty years Hidy has been teaching and lecturing, and now teaches part-time at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He is married to the painter Cindia Sanford, and lives and works in Merrimac, Massachusetts.
